Happy Tuesday! Tax myths are everywhere. Some are outdated, others come from bad advice, and some are straight from TikTok. This week, weâre sorting fact from fiction before one of these âhelpfulâ tips makes its way onto your tax return.Â
Weâll kick it off with deductions, then move through tax brackets, side-hustle income, and one very questionable wedding write-off.
This weekâs lineup:
-
đ§Ÿ That write-off comes with a reality check.
-
đ€ If a higher tax bracket has you side-eyeing your raise, we need to talk.
-
âïž Your side hustle doesnât get a hall pass from the IRS.
-
đ This is why you donât let TikTok plan your wedding.

Tax Strategies
đ§Ÿ Tax deductible doesnât mean free: How tax deductions really work
The Quick & Bristly: A tax deduction can lower the income youâre taxed on, but it doesnât erase what you spent. Always run the numbers before chasing a write-off, and donât confuse deductions with tax credits, which can cut your tax bill dollar-for-dollar.
âItâs tax deductibleâ sounds like a good reason to go on a shopping spree. Spend the money, claim the write-off, and you just scored something for free, right? Except thatâs not how it works.
A deduction doesnât make the expense disappear. It just reduces the income youâre taxed on. And the amount that you actually save is usually a whole lot less than what you spent.
Where the tax savings actually happen
One of the biggest deduction myths is that they knock money off your tax bill dollar-for-dollar. We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but thatâs not how it works. Instead, a deduction reduces your taxable income â aka the money that is taxed by the IRS.Â
Instead of coming at you with more tax vocabulary, letâs look at an example with a nice round number.Â
If you have a $1,000 deduction, that doesnât mean your tax bill drops by $1,000. Instead, you get to subtract that $1,000 from the income being taxed.Â
How much you actually save varies by tax bracket. If your top tax bracket is 22%, the deduction could save you roughly $220 in federal income tax. At 12%, itâs closer to $120. Dropping $1,000 to maybe save $220 just doesnât add up.
The deduction has to count

Because weâre talking taxes, of course thereâs another catch. A deduction can be perfectly legit and still do absolutely nothing for your tax bill.Â
Most taxpayers take the standard deduction. If you choose to itemize (or youâre required to), it makes the most sense when your eligible deductions add up to more than the standard deduction. In other words, just throwing another receipt in the pile of expenses doesnât always mean it will change your tax bill.
And if you ran the numbers and the deduction could help your tax bill, you have to make sure it even qualifies. Before you claim that deduction, check the rules and make sure you have the receipts to back it up.Â
If deductions feel a little overwhelming, we get it. Fortunately, there’s another type of tax break that works very differently.

Tax Strategies

đ€ That higher tax bracket isnât taking your raise
The Quick & Bristly: Moving into a higher tax bracket doesnât mean all your income is taxed at a higher rate. Only the portion above the threshold is, although earning more can still affect withholding and tax breaks.
You got a raise, so life is good. That is, until you remember that tax brackets exist. Suddenly, youâre wondering if earning more money somehow means bringing home less.Â
You â and your bank account â can relax because thatâs just another tax myth. Federal tax brackets donât quite work like that.
Different dollars, different rates
Moving into a higher bracket doesnât mean the IRS taxes every dollar you earn at the higher rate. Federal income tax is progressive, meaning different portions of your taxable income are taxed at different rates. For 2026, those rates are 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. We wonât bust out the complicated charts, but just know that the income ranges for each bracket depend on your filing status.Â
Your marginal tax rate is the rate that applies to your highest chunk of taxable income. Everything below that threshold keeps its lower rate.
Hereâs what happens when you cross the line
Say youâre a single filer with $51,500 in taxable income. Your 12% bracket tops out at $50,400. Hereâs how that breaks down:Â
-
First $12,400 at 10% = $1,240
-
Next $38,000 at 12% = $4,560
-
Final $1,100 at 22% = $242
-
Total federal income tax: about $6,042 before applicable credits
Now, letâs pretend the myth were true and all $51,500 got taxed at 22%. Your bill would be $11,330. Ouch.
Thankfully, tax brackets arenât trapdoors. Crossing into the next one doesnât drag every dollar down with you. Only the income above the threshold gets the higher rate.
But tax brackets arenât the only moving parts
More income can still affect credits, deductions, and benefits. Some credits, like the Earned Income Tax Credit, phase out as income rises. Your state may tax income differently, too. Your paycheck may also show more federal tax withheld after a raise, but withholding is money paid toward your eventual tax bill â not proof that your new bracket stole your raise.Â
So take the raise and leave the tax myth behind. And if your income changes significantly, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to check your withholding and update Form W-4 if needed.

Wacky Tax Tales
đ No, the IRS wonât pay for your wedding

The Quick & Bristly: Social media âtax hacksâ say that you can write off your wedding on your tax return. A nonprofit venue doesnât make your wedding deductible. Only a legitimate charitable contribution may qualify, no matter what TikTok tells you.
TikTok has given us dance trends, questionable advice, and now, a new tax strategy that pays for your wedding. The latest âlife hackâ from the influencers that brought you the $70 water bottle is that you can claim tax deductible wedding expenses if you get married at a church, museum, or other nonprofit organization.Â
Nonprofit venues arenât tax loopholes
Your wedding is a personal expense. Holding it at a venue with nonprofit status doesnât suddenly make the IRS start throwing around deductions like confetti.Â
If you give money to a qualified organization and receive something in return, you can only deduct the amount you paid above the fair market value of what you received. Plus, that extra amount must also be a gift. If thatâs too much tax-speak, hereâs what it actually looks like.
A donation isnât the same as a rental fee
Imagine that comparable venues rent for $4,000. You pay a nonprofit venue $5,000. Great, thatâs your $1,000 wedding tax deduction!Â
Not so fast. If $5,000 is simply the venue’s price, you just paid for a rental, and none of it is deductible. But if the venueâs fair market value is $4,000 and you knowingly give the nonprofit an extra $1,000 as a charitable contribution, that $1,000 may qualify as a deduction.Â
If the donation does qualify, you need documented proof. Contributions of $250 or more generally require a written acknowledgement, and charities have disclosure requirements for certain payments over $75 when you receive goods or services in return.
The church donation can count. The wedding expenses donât.
Churches can also be qualified charitable organizations, and thereâs even a special rule for certain âintangible religious benefits.â But that doesnât mean that your flowers, musicians, or decorations are covered, even if the church provided them.Â
Your wedding is still a personal expense, but if you make a legitimate donation, get it in writing. Just donât plan to have a Kardashian-worthy wedding because TikTok told you the IRS was footing the bill.

The quick (and slightly prickly) stories we didnât have time to get to:
-
đ±Â The IRS recently replaced IRS2GO with a new mobile app that lets you check balances, make payments, view notices, and more. Your notifications just got a little more stressful.
-
âł Two brothers pleaded guilty to tax crimes after failing to report more than $1.3 million in income, including cash from their golf tee-time brokering side hustle. Remember, the IRS is less forgiving about cheating than your golf buddies.
-
đ¶ The Treasury has finished automatically enrolling more than 60 million eligible kids in Trump Accounts. Parents have paperwork to do, while the beneficiaries remain invested in Goldfish crackers and getting more screentime.
-
You’ve filed quarterly estimates, tracked every mile, and survived at least one audit scare, and you still don’t have a will. Trust & Will gets it done in as little as 30 minutes, with attorney-designed documents built for your state. Will plans start at $199, with payment plans available (sponsored).
