Every Saturday, we open the mailbag, pour some strong coffee, and tackle the tax questions keeping America awake at 2 a.m. Here’s this week’s question:
| ❝ |
| |
We’re getting married on Valentine’s Day! Do we have to wait until next year to see any tax love?
Congrats! But yes, you’ll have to wait until next year.
To be perfectly clear, getting hitched on Valentine’s Day 2026 won’t backdate your love to the 2025 tax year. You will still file as “single” (or whatever your status was on Dec. 31, 2025) for the returns you are filing right now. The big rewards for your 2026 tax union (like the doubled deduction) won’t officially kick in until you file your taxes in early 2027.
Here are the highlights on the rewards for your 2026 tax union:
-
Your standard deduction doubles to $32,200 for the 2026 tax season. That is a giant shield protecting your income from being taxed at all.
-
Most tax brackets are now perfectly symmetrical. For 2026, the 10 percent through 32 percent brackets for married couples are exactly twice the size of single brackets.
-
Planning a big party? For 2026, the Annual Gift Tax Exclusion is $19,000 per person. This means a married couple can receive up to $38,000 from one person (like a generous parent) without a tax bill or extra paperwork.
-
If one of you isn’t working, the other can still contribute to a Spousal IRA. It’s a great way to keep building your nest egg together.
We found that married filing jointly is almost always the winner because filing separately often disallows key credits, such as the Child Tax Credit and Education Credits.
While the tax benefits are a nice wedding gift from Congress, the real win is having a partner to handle the chaos of life (and the tax code) with. Secure that $32,200 deduction and enjoy your Valentine’s dinner. You’ve earned it.

PS: If you have decided that reading about tax regulations on a weekend is a form of mild torture you no longer wish to endure, you can click here to opt out. We’ll miss you, but we won’t hold a grudge.
